Take passion, creation, dedication, culture and sprinkle some curiosity on it and you get SomethingNaive. A consistent and undeniable expression of self. SomethingNaive the belief that art is everywhere and in everything.
Today I am here to be a scholar and give my take on what makes an artist.
An artist?
The general definition of an artist, doesn't satisfy me. It captures so little; " a person who creates art (such as painting, sculpture, music, or writing) using conscious skill and creative imagination ".
I do agree partially with the part about conscious skill and creative imagination, but it being limited to painters, sculptors, musicians and writers; is where my issue lies. Limiting it to just these is being shortsighted.
There is so much more expression in life and not all of it is intentional. You waking up and interacting with the world is also art whether it is in a negative light or a positive one. You are an artist.
How are you an artist?
That was a bold statement and one most would disagree with but give me a chance; indulge me and let me convince you. That indeed you are an artist.
We all have strengths and weaknesses. Not in the traditional sense but under the lense that there are things you are passionate about and others not so much, there are things you are superb at and things that you are mediocre at, there are things you dedicate your time to and others are neglected, there are things you want to imbued yourself in and others not so much and lastly; there are things you want to understand beyond the mundane.
A story!
I have a friend, actually a couple of friends that understand music so well that it is beautiful to see them interact with it. They love music so much so, that it makes you jealous seeing them interacting with it. There must be a friend that does something as ordinary as listening to music that it gives you goosebumps. Now to me that is an art form.
An experience for me as an observer and an expression for them as an artist because to get to that point. There must be SomethingNaive.
Passion, creation (the moment), dedication (time spent listening to music), culture (the understanding) and curiosity (the pursuit of music).
Naivety?
Now I challenge you to look inwards into your own interactions. Was there a time you got goosebumps? Were the ordinary felt extraordinary and left you with a sense of awe and maybe a little bit of jealous and wonder; either from a sibling, a friend, a colleague or a stranger.
You might argue that this is a very naive take on what an artist is and what art is and that is exactly what it is. SomethingNaive.
Where consistency and intention meet SomethingNaive; is where artists exists.
