Ode to [kimetsu.]
Ivory Park’s Finest: Carving His Own Musical Path
[kimetsu.], real name Itumeleng Leso, is an artist like no other — an anomaly in the best possible way. Since discovering his music in 2023, It's safe to say that I've been on a journey towards becoming a superfan of everything he creates. This post is an ode to his work — a tribute to the artistry, innovation, and undeniable presence he brings to every track.
The first track that truly pulled me into his world was Some Fall In Love, We Dance In It performed by Chipego at the very first Soundcheck I attended in November 2023. The venue's sound setup was far from ideal - the buzzing speakers and crackling audio threatened to drown every detail - but somehow, the song's production quality cut through the noise with absolute clarity. In that moment, amidst the distortion and chaos, I knew [kimetsu.] was something special.
Production Master
Growing up in Newcastle, KZN, the sound of drums late at night was a familiar rhythm of life that echoed through the dark as newly initiated traditional healers celebrated their crossing over. It was a soundtrack ingrained in our daily existence. [kimetsu.]'s music transports me to that same place, the only difference being his infusion of modern house and hip-hop influences.
At times, his music almost feels hypnotic, pulling the listener in and making them one with its groove. His sample selection is of the highest quality, allowing him to convey deep emotions through intricate instrumentation and unpredictable drum patterns. There's a depth to his production that makes every listen feel like an experience rather than just a song.
Through a conversation that I had the opportunity to have with him, one thing became immediately clear—he is a deeply passionate and incredibly skilled artist. This passion is woven into every aspect of his music. Despite refusing to be confined to a single genre, he has carved out a sound that is distinctly his own and constantly pushes the boundaries of his creativity. Even though his sonic identity is almost set in stone — marked by ambient soundscapes, a distinctive approach to percussion, and isigubhu-inspired drum patterns with intricate beat arrangements, he has an incredible ability to adapt and weave these elements into any genre. His DJ sets are a testament to this versatility, seamlessly blending styles while staying true to his signature sound.
Collaboration
[kimetsu.]'s approach to collaboration has elevated his music to a level where I genuinely believe he might be one of, if not the best, producers in the scene right now. His work with artists like Chipego, Girlthewoman, Enocs Mae, LUNGĒLWA, and Johnny Wxlf has resulted in some of the most captivating vocal performances to emerge from Joburg's underground scene. His ability to bring out the best in his collaborators is rare. His music isn't just production; it's an invitation, a canvas for vocalists to showcase their artistry in its purest form.
When we spoke about the spiritual aspects of his music, I asked whether he felt his music pushes collaborators into a space where they connect with something beyond themselves, allowing them to perform at such an elevated level. His response not only deeply resonated with me, it was also both unexpected and beautiful:
"The concept of music being spiritual is not something I create, nor is it something I actively try to do. For me, music has to be fun and fulfilling."
What struck me about this is that, even though he doesn't intentionally shape his music to be spiritual, it naturally takes on that quality. The depth, emotion, and presence in his sound make it feel sacred, and that energy extends to his collaborators, allowing them to reach new heights in their performances.
Through My Lens
The Joburg music scene is still new to me. Before 2023, I barely scratched the surface, only diving deep into SoundCloud after discovering [kimetsu.] and Jinji through Soundcheck. In that short time, I've come to realize that [kimetsu.] isn't just another producer—he's a force shaping the future of the underground. His approach to music and collaboration is unlike anything I've seen. He isn't chasing trends or trying to fit into a mould. Instead, he's carving out a sound that feels timeless, a sound that values artistry over hype. When you listen to his music—or even just have a conversation with him—you can sense it: the art comes first. It's more important than the distractions most people get caught up in.
[kimetsu.] is in a constant search for the next sound, always refining, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. That kind of dedication and that love for the craft, is what makes him, in my book, the best producer in the scene right now. And if you listen closely, I think you'll agree — he should be in yours too.
Here are some of my favourite songs by [kimetsu.]- hopefully you also become a fan.
